You, Me and a Caribou

It was 1986 when my lover, Mark Schulze (now my hubby) and I decided to sell or give away all our earthly possessions and travel in the United States and Canada for the next nine months in a small camper. Our friends, whom we forgive our beloved TV and kitchen products, while happily receiving these gifts, is also concerned that Mark and I were kind of planning to disappear forever. It was like the neighbor in "Revolutionary Road", which declared the happiness that theirFriends (Kate Winslet and Leonard DiCaprio) had decided to go and live in Paris, but secretly, that they just like the rest of them remain to tell time.

But Mark and I went. We did not know how long we would have gone, and we did not know whether we would ever return. That's the beauty of it, if you live in full for each day as it comes, not yesterday, not tomorrow but for today. That was the core of the entire trip. We'd mosey on up the west coast, with his head in and around Alaska, then in Canada and the northern United States, all the way to the east coast to the tip of Florida, and get through the southern states, and then home to San Diego. IF, of course, we were not distracted on the road.

One of my favorite little adventure was when Mark and I backpack in the wilderness of Denali (formerly Mt. McKinley) known. We parked our Chinook in a gravel lot, and then we jumped on a bus in Denali Park. We landed at the very point where wewandered until we found a nice spot near a small lake. We set up our tent and I was getting dinner ready, as Mark discovered a young caribou across the lake. You can see it in the photo above - it is quite small, but you can figure his studly. We both noticed that he was wounded and limping. Perhaps he felt safer with us there on the other side of the lake than from himself. I could understand that, as on that day Mark and I were on our way adopted by some brambly bushes with thedistinct smell of stinky socks rises around us. We were later athletes from Alaska, informed the Grizzlies smell like dirty socks. We did not spot any grizzlies in that area that day, but believe me, our antennae up.

Melted when the sun of day and dusk descended, was the caribou to rest, and then Mark and I crawled into our tent to do the same. The next morning the young caribou was gone. All that remains is this image. Sorry again1986, a pair of video producers and we decided that it would take far too difficult for us the video camera and VCR decks (you had to have both at the time, only to record all the shots) in Denali. Of course, we have regretted it ever since.
